Tulamben Beach, located on Bali’s northeastern coast, is renowned for its exceptional diving experiences, attracting divers from around the globe. The area offers a diverse range of dive sites suitable for both beginners and experienced divers. A small fishing village, Tulamben became one of the most popular dive sites on the island in 1942, when the Liberty, a US Army Transport, was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine off the northeast coast of Bali.
USAT Liberty Shipwreck: One of the most famous dive sites in Tulamben is the USAT Liberty Shipwreck. This World War II-era cargo ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1942 and now rests on the seafloor, creating an artificial reef teeming with marine life. Divers can explore the wreck and its surroundings, encountering a variety of fish species and vibrant coral formations.
Coral Gardens: Beyond the shipwreck, Tulamben boasts several coral gardens rich in biodiversity. These sites feature healthy coral reefs, home to numerous fish species, including macro critters like nudibranchs and pygmy seahorses, making it a haven for macro photographers.
Diving Conditions: The best time to dive in Tulamben is during Bali’s dry season, from April to September, when water temperatures range from 27-29°C, and visibility is optimal. The calmest water conditions during these months make for comfortable and enjoyable dives.
